While running through the woods, chasing a rabbit, Josh & Billy stumble upon the site of an old collapsed cabin. After several weeks of painstaking digging through the rubble, they discover a chest buried within the cabin’s stone foundation. But, the sudden hopes and joy of finding a chest full of gold coins quickly turned to disappointment when it was revealed that it was only filled with books.
But soon, Josh, being the bookworm of the two, forgets about the gold coins and becomes curious about the books and takes several home to read. When Josh discovers that the books belonged to a fellow by the name of Sam who fell out of a sleigh and wakes up the next morning lying beneath a giant pine tree. This all took place on Christmas Eve 1896. Josh could no longer keep this to himself and he tells Billy.
Several weeks later Josh’s mom catches on about the journals, and after hearing the whole story, she demands that they’re returned to their rightful owner. But, with no owner to be found, it’s up to Josh, Billy and their moms to research the journals in order to find the owner. Soon, word gets out to the newspaper about the journals and suddenly, the whole town unites to help read through the forty-four years of journals in hopes of finding Sam, who in-turn is really Wendell, the Christmas elf.
Not long after Wendell is discovered in a nursing home and confesses that he really is a Christmas Elf and that the contents of the journals are true, he has a stroke and is lying in a hospital bed waiting for a miracle.
Meanwhile, the search is on for the gold chain that will bring Wendell back to his original elfin self and up to the Plateau by one minute past midnight on Christmas day to meet up with Santa Claus. But if the Gold Chain isn’t found in time, Wendell will soon perish.
